Warren Gatland hasn’t picked a back as Lions captain. It’s not a surprise.

Brian O’Driscoll being dropped from the match day squad entirely might have been a bit of a shock for many rugby fans. Not getting the leadership of a Gatland team, however?

Not so much.

Warren Gatland’s fetish for picking forwards as captains continued unabated with Welsh lock Alun Wyn Jones set to double his previous test captaincy experience on Saturday when leading out the Lions in Sydney.

It leaves the number of times that Warren Gatland has picked a back as either his test captain or as club season captain at a nice round zero.

Habit is a hard thing to change.
