Last Day of the Season… or is it?

It’s come down to the wire for four teams in what has been a tremendously exciting last week of the MLB regular season.

Starting with the National League, Atlanta went down 7-1 to the Phillies last night. Thousands of Braves fans stayed on in the Ted to watch the action from Houston on the Turner Field big screen in the hope of seeing the Cardinals somehow lose to an Astros team who are pretty much the worst team in baseball. They didn’t go home happy. The Cards made hard work of it but ultimately came back from 5-0 and 6-5 down to win 13-6 to draw level with the Braves.

In the AL things were seemingly a little more straightforward as Boston and Tampa beat the Orioles and Yankees respectively. It wasn’t all plain sailing, however, especially for the Rays who in the 6th inning with the bases loaded and no outs were blessed with only the third triple play in franchise history which kept the game tied at two runs apiece.

Tonight’s arithmetic is simple. We have a tie in both leagues for the Wild Card lead and a very good chance of having at least one Thursday single-game tiebreaker. As a baseball fan, that’s my fervent hope.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay
TBD vs. Price

Boston @ Baltimore
Lester vs. Simon

Scenario: if either Tampa or Boston win, and the other loses, they will win the Wild Card. Otherwise there will be a tiebreaker game in Tampa on Thursday.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Philadelphia @ Atlanta
Blanton vs. Hudson

St. Louis @ Houston
Carpenter vs. Myers

Scenario: if either Atlanta or St. Louis win, and the other loses, they will win the Wild Card. Otherwise there will be a tiebreaker game in St. Louis on Thursday.

Tonight’s live game is the Boston and Baltimore matchup on ESPN America; first pitch is 00:05 GMT.

Until redeye Thursday…
